Community-Based Instruction
Independent Living Skills Through CBI
Community-Based Instruction (CBI) for FFA students is accomplished through the collaborative efforts of teachers, instructional aides, therapists, vocational teachers and family members. CBI programs are much more than going on field trips; it is a research-based instructional approach that offers academic, social, behavioral, vocational, and communication skill building opportunities.
Relationships with dozens of community employers provides opportunities for FFA students to identify jobs of interest to them, and simultaneously learn to manage their behavior in a variety of work environments. Students also learn resume writing and job interviewing techniques, how to use public transportation, and appropriate behavior in social settings. The CBI program is also an excellent vehicle for helping employers and the general public increase their familiarity with individuals with special needs.
